Project 1
For Project 1, we are required to create an infographic poster based on the Pasta Granny video. This project trains us to transform visual content into a professional 2D design while clearly and accurately presenting the information through effective visual communication.
Instructable Infographics poster
In this infographic poster project, we were given a briefing about Project 1, including the objectives, design requirements, and expectations. The briefing guided us in understanding how to transform the Pasta Granny video into a clear, well-structured, and professionally designed 2D visual presentation.
1. Definition
-
Miller’s Law (George A. Miller, 1956) states that short-term memory can hold approximately 7 ± 2 items at one time.
-
This means people can only process a limited amount of information simultaneously.
2. Key Concept – Chunking
-
Chunking = grouping information into smaller, meaningful units.
-
Instead of presenting many separate details, information is organized into clear sections or categories.
3. Application in Infographic Design
-
Divide content into 5–9 main sections (maximum).
-
Use headings and subheadings to separate ideas.
-
Group related data using boxes, grids, or visual blocks.
-
Use icons and color coding to visually connect related information.
-
Avoid overcrowding text in one area.
4. Purpose in Design
-
Reduces cognitive overload.
-
Improves readability and clarity.
-
Makes information easier to scan and remember.
-
Creates a clean and professional layout structure.
5. Conclusion
Applying Miller’s Law in infographic design ensures that information is structured, organized, and easy for the audience to understand and retain.
Before starting the poster design process, I created a mood board to present to Sir Martin. The purpose of the mood board was to show my visual direction and overall concept for the Gnocchi Pesto infographic poster based on the Pasta Grannies video.
The mood board included references for color palette, typography style, layout inspiration, imagery, and overall visual tone. This helped clarify the design direction and ensured that the concept aligned with the project requirements before moving into the final poster development stage.
I found many references during my research, but three of them really caught my attention. The first reference shows a Chinese dish, the second one focuses on pasta, and the last one is about a sandwich. I like these three references because they clearly show the step-by-step process and also display the ingredients used, which makes the cooking process easier to understand visually.
However, the first reference is the most interesting to me. I feel that with some adjustments, its style and structure would work well for presenting the process of making gnocchi pesto. As a design student, I think this reference has a strong visual approach that could effectively communicate the cooking steps in a clear and engaging way.
Below is the main color palette that I will use for the design. Even though there are some shading variations, these colors are the primary ones. I chose these colors because they represent the look of gnocchi and also reflect the feeling of Italian cuisine. In my opinion, these colors are strong and vibrant, which helps them stand out visually while still matching the theme of an Italian dish.
The fonts that I use are Bungee and Minion Variable Concept. I chose these fonts because they create a nice contrast in the design. Bungee feels fun and very eye-catching, so it is suitable for titles or elements that need to stand out and grab attention. Meanwhile, Minion Variable Concept feels more elegant and readable, which makes it more suitable for explaining the step-by-step process clearly.
The sketch I created was inspired by two design references that I found. My intention was to present the step-by-step process of making Gnocchi Pesto. However, I did not want the layout to look too complicated, so I simplified the steps to make the information clear and easy to understand.
I made sure that all the ingredients were included in the design, and I placed the final dish at the bottom as the main focal point. This helps guide the viewer’s eye from the process at the top down to the finished result, creating a clear visual hierarchy and strong composition.
Digitization
After completing the sketch, I moved on to the digitization process using Adobe Illustrator. This software helped me create clean and precise vector illustrations, making the design process more efficient and allowing me to refine the shapes, layout, and visual elements for the infographic poster.
The first step I did was importing my sketch into Adobe Illustrator as a reference. This helped guide me during the digitization process while I recreated the elements and refined them into clean vector illustrations.
After that, I focused on digitizing the main dish, the gnocchi, turning the sketch into a clean vector illustration. I refined the shapes and details to make the dish visually appealing since it would become the main focal point of the infographic poster.
After that, I started digitizing the main ingredients based on the ones shown in the YouTube video. I recreated each ingredient as vector illustrations to ensure they matched the recipe and supported the visual explanation in the infographic.
After that, I created the step-by-step process of making the gnocchi dough and shaping the gnocchi, as these steps are the most prominently shown in the YouTube video. This helps clearly explain the main process in the infographic. I also used the element that I just made in the ingredients section.
I also illustrated the process of making the pesto sauce by grinding the ingredients in a mortar. This part was quite challenging because I wanted to show the ingredients inside the mortar clearly while keeping the illustration clean and understandable.
I also created the step-by-step boiling process of the gnocchi. In this step, olive oil is added while boiling, not just plain boiling. This detail is important because it helps make the gnocchi softer and more enjoyable to eat.
After completing all the elements for the Gnocchi Pesto process, I started adding a background to make the design stand out more. I also added several layout shapes to organize the infographic and clearly present the step-by-step process.
Then, I added the fonts and text to explain the process of making Pesto Gnocchi, ensuring the information is clear and easy to follow in the infographic.
Final Instructable Infographics poster
The feedback from Sir Martin was that, overall, the infographic is well-structured and looks good. However, he suggested shortening some sentences and avoiding too many long details—making the text concise and clear while still keeping the key information.
Experience
In this project, I experienced a hands-on approach to presenting information visually through infographic design. Some parts, like sketching and organizing the steps, were straightforward, while digitizing all the elements and arranging the layout required more time and focus. Watching the Pasta Grannies video and turning it into a clear visual process was both engaging and educational. I especially enjoyed combining my interest in cooking with design, as it made the work feel more personal and meaningful.
Observation
Throughout the process, I observed that visual storytelling is not just about making something look appealing, but also about guiding the viewer clearly through information. Layout, hierarchy, and placement of ingredients and steps are crucial to ensure readability and comprehension. I also noticed that small details—like emphasizing the main dish, using color blocks, and spacing elements properly—can significantly improve the clarity and effectiveness of the infographic.
Findings
From this project, I discovered that an infographic can communicate a recipe just as effectively as words alone. Each visual element—from ingredient illustrations to step-by-step diagrams—helps the audience understand and retain information. I learned that as a designer, it is important to balance aesthetics with clarity, ensuring that the information is engaging yet easy to follow. Despite the challenges in vector work and managing multiple elements, I felt satisfied with the final outcome, as it successfully translated the Gnocchi Pesto process into a visually appealing and informative poster.
