Process Work
Week 12 : Research, Reference, and Sketching
For this week, we were asked to make an animated webcomic. We were told to make a comic in a surrealist style. The reference I use is Junji Ito. He is a manga artist, and his work uses a surrealism style.

After looking for references, I determined the storyline that I would take. This is the paragraph I took to turn it into a visual webcomic that I will make:
"To look at," said the sergeant major, fumbling in his pocket, "it's just an ordinary little paw, dried to a mummy."
He took something out of his pocket and proffered it. Mrs. White drew back with a grimace, but her son, taking it, examined it curiously.
"And what is there special about it?" inquired Mr. White as he took it from his son, and having examined it, placed it upon the table.
"It had a spell put on it by an old fakir," said the sergeant-major, "a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it."
Then I do the sketch for the webcomic:

I use action-to-action transitions during my sketch work. Initially I used subject to subject, but in my opinion the panel is more suitable for using action to action. But some of the panels I used were subject to subject.

After that I sent my sketch to Mr. Hafiz to get feedback. He said it's already good, so I can proceed to digitization. I put my sketch on a moodboard so it can help explain it better.

WEEK 13: Digitalization
After sketching, this week I started digitizing in Illustrator. To trace my sketch, I use the brush tool. At first I downloaded a brush tool that was suitable for digitization.

After tracing, I started to color using the blue color palette, which I found from references. I used a lot of shades of blue in this coloring. Heres the color palette that I used:

For monkey paws, I used reference colors from several monkey paw's covers. I used the color gray so the color won't' be off.

After that I did the rest of the colors from the panels to the background. There are several panels where I used a blur effect to make the atmosphere even more horrific.

Week 14 : Cover
For this week, I'm making the cover for the webcomic. Here's the reference that I used for the cover:

after researching references and collecting several references. I started to sketch the cover. I made the monkey paw's like a manipulative, and underneath there are puppets from each member of the white family. I made this sketch because the family was hanging on to the monkey paw's cursed wish.

After that I sent my sketch again to Mr. Hafiz to get another feedback. After that he approved, then I can do my digitization in Illustrator using the brush tool and also the pen tool.
Fig 3.4 Digitization
I used the same color from the webcomic, namely blue. I
also added a fire effect behind the hand to encourage
the horror theme.
Fig 3.5 Digitization
I also added some textures to the comic cover. I used textured watercolor paper for the hands and puppets to add an old-style impression.

This week I started doing animation. For the animation itself, I use AE software. The panels that I animated are panel 2 for the spiral background, panel 3 for the hands and also the word "snatch," panel 4 for some of the eyes, and panel 7 for the spiral background.
I gave the timeline of each panel a maximum of 2 seconds because the animation will be converted into a GIF. The animation I did was only minor animation.

I also animated the spiral on the cover of the webcomic. I animated the cover to support the horror background and references from Junji Ito; for the cover itself, I animated 2 seconds.

FEEDBACK
Week 12
Sir Hafiz said, he already likes the sketch; it's just that I have to change the position of the hand, and also I need to fix some of the composition.
Week 15
I took a look at the final digitization and coloring, and Sir Hafiz said, "It will work." For the animation, he said that my file was objectionable, so I had to make sure my GIF file was even smaller.
REFLECTION
Carrying out this task is extraordinary. I really like reading comics, and this assignment is one of my favorite things to do in making comics. At first I had difficulty determining the visuals for each panel, but with the help of my friend, I was able to execute it well. I also had difficulty shading the blue color, because this was the first time. Even though there were difficulties, I was able to complete this task successfully. Overall, this assignment was challenging and rewarding, and taught me valuable skills in the process.
