LECTURES

Classroom Summary

WEEK 1
(There are no classes for this week), but we were given a link containing videos, websites, and study cases.

WEEK 2

In the second week, Mr. Hafiz taught us the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. To help us understand more, we were asked to try a game called the Berzier gameBézier is a game to train us to use the pen tool so that it makes us understand more about the various ways that can be used on the pen tool.

Fig 1.1

After that we were taught to trace shapes on the vormmator. We trace the shape using the pen tool that we have tried in the Bezier game. We also use several tools. We are taught shortcuts to use these tools. These are some of the shapes that I have traced, even though this is my first time using them, but I am slowly understanding how to use them.He then told us to create characters with the shapes provided.

This is the step where I am trying to trace the shape for my assignment:

WEEK 3
This week Mr. Hafiz taught us Pathfinder. He taught me Pathfinder to make it easier for me to do the assignment; after that, he told us to trace the Adidas and Twitter logos with Pathfinder and Golden Ratio.

Fig 2.1

Before making a Twitter logo from Golden Ration and Pathfinder. He explained about collecting vormmator tasks and explained about the character shape elements, there are 3 elements of circle, square and triangle.

Fig 2.2

Circles associated with words such as soft, unity, cute, power, and r," and "innocence." They are less common, so they work well to attract attention and set things apart. They represent community, integrity, and perfection. Circles and ovals are mostly used for friendly and outgoing faces.

Fig 2.3

Squares associated with words such as strong, stable, balanced. Squares and rectangles create a sense of equality and conformity. The number four is associated with very material things of this world. They often depict steadfast characters who are dependable and are commonly used for superheroes.

Fig 2.4

Rectangulars associated with words such as movement, power, and harmony. Triangles have energy and power and suggest conflict or strength. Other associations can be progression, purpose, hierarchy, law, religion, tension, etc. Bad guys and villains are often based upon dominant triangular concepts, as they appear malicious, sinister, and communicate with the most aggression.

INSTRUCTIONS

Process Work

Part "A"

Week 1
(There are no classes for this week.)

Week 2: Research, Reference, and Sketching
For this week we were asked to make characters from the shape of the vormmator that Mr. Hafiz had provided. From there I started brainstorming and looking for references for the character I wanted to create.

When I get an idea of what character I want to create, I start sketching the character I want to create. The character I want to create is a kitsune. Kitsune is a 9-tailed fox. Kitsune are very famous in Japanese mythology, but I have my own story from the character I created. Here are some references that I took:

Fig 3.1 References

This is my sketch that I drew from the reference that I got:

Fig 3.2 Sketch

I added several elements because I wanted my character to be more like a monster, so I mixed in other elements, such as adding horns, wings, etc. This is the reference that I took for angel wings. For the horns and halo, I just took the inspiration from the characters I used to make.

Digitalization
After that I started tracing the sketch that I had made with the vormmator shapet. But there are some elements that I have to change, such as the tail. Because the tails overlapped when I silhouetted them, they didn't have the character shape I wanted, so I deleted the tails, and I left one tail remaining.

Week 3: Digitalization Silhouette
This week we have started to color our vormmator characters with silhouette colors. I wanted my character's silhouette to be bold, so I used black, white, and orange to make my silhouette even clearer.

Fig 5.1 Digitization Silhoutte

After that, Mr. Hafiz told us that if we also add shadow and detail to our character and collect it together with the silhouette, we can get extra marks, so I put some shadow. For shading my character, I used the pathfinder that Mr. Hafiz taught me. I add a cool or warm tone color. I also add some fluffy texture to make the fluff go poof, and lastly I add some fine detail to make it more of a kitsune vibe.

Backstory
My character's name is Mikan. Mikan is half human and half kitsune. Mikan is taken from the Japanese name for oranges as in fruit. Gray color is taken from eternity. Other elements are taken from hybrids of devils and angels; both of the elements represent good and evil.

Part "B"

WEEK 4: Research and Reference
For my character's background, I want a forest or mythical forest theme. This week I looked for references and color palettes that were suitable for the theme I chose.

Fig 7.1 References Background

I also took it from a famous cartoon reference on Cartoon Network, namely Gravity Falls. I like the color and style of the cartoon.

Fig 7.2 Refernces Background

From all the references, there are several color palettes that I took. I wanted my forest at night to have a gloomy and dark atmosphere, so I chose a dark blue color. I also added red for the elements my character has.

WEEK 5: Sketch and Moodboard
This week I started sketching my background. I sketched using one-point perspective. In this sketch, I added lake elements to support the forest atmosphere.

Fig 8.1 Sketch Background

After that I sent my sketch to Mr. Hafiz to get feedback. After looking at it, there was some feedback given from Mr. Hafiz that my sketch didn't have enough perspective, and also I had to take reference from framed ink. So I revised my sketch using reference from Framed Ink.

Fig 8.3 Revision Sketch Background

After the revision and the feedback from Mr. Hafiz, I can now move on to digitalization. I put my sketch on a moodboard so it can help explain it better.

WEEK 6: Digitalization Background
This week I started to digitalize using Illustrator. The shapes that I use to digitize are some of the vormattor shapes and some of the shapes that I made myself.

Fig 9.1 Digitization Background

After that I started coloring my background with the color palette that I had determined. I used textures and gradients for bushes, rivers, and also some trees.

Fig 9.2 Digitization Background

Then I add some details. I want my character to be the focal point, so I give light to make my character shine.

Fig 9.2 Digitization Background

After finishing with my background, I entered my background into the Pokémon card template that was provided. I chose a classic template to better exude the Pokémon card; after that, I added details.

FEEDBACK

Week 3 (Vormator Challenge)
Mr. Hafiz commented on my design. He said my design is good, so I can continue the digitization process.

Week 5
Mr. Hafiz said that my sketch background just lacks a clear perspective, so I revised it again and made it using framed ink reference. After that he said that the second sketch was better, so I could continue the process.

REFLECTION

While working on this assignment, this assignment taught me many things, starting from using software called Illustrator. At first I had difficulty using the application because it was my first time using it, so the tools used were not familiar, but because the tutorial was able to help me learn about the application. During this task we were asked to create characters using vormator shapes. I had difficulty creating the character I wanted because we could only use these shapes, was able to get through the task well, just like the task of creating the background for the vormator character.  and there was no distortion. But I was able to get through the task well, just like the task of creating the background for the vormator character. Overall, I liked the assignment even though I experienced difficulties, but the assignment taught me a lot of things.
